Why optometry practices need a different kind of website

Someone notices their vision has changed, searches optometrist near me on their phone, and opens the first two results. You have about fifteen seconds.

They want to book, not call

A patient deciding at 9pm cannot phone you. If the booking button is below the fold or buried in a menu, they book with the practice down the road instead.

They want to know the cost first

Bulk billing eligibility, gap fees, and on-the-spot health fund claiming are the questions your front desk answers twenty times a day. Answering them on the website saves the call and wins the booking.

Every service is a separate search

Ortho-K, myopia control, children's eye tests and dry eye are searched by different people with different worries. One combined services page cannot rank for all of them.

Your competition is walking distance away

Almost nobody drives past three practices to reach a fourth. Local search is the whole game, and it is won on specifics rather than volume.

Your audience has vision impairment

Small grey text and low-contrast buttons are a problem on any website. On an optometry website they are an obvious contradiction. We build to accessibility standards as a matter of course.

The advertising rules are different

You are a registered health practitioner, so your website is regulated advertising. Most web designers do not know this, and it is where practices get into trouble.

What you get

Everything your practice website needs

Not a generic business template with a stock photo of an eye. Every element below exists because optometry patients look for it.

Online eye test booking

A booking action visible without scrolling and repeated at the end of every page. Connecting it to your practice management system is assessed and quoted separately.

Medicare & health fund clarity

A dedicated place for bulk billing eligibility, out-of-pocket costs and on-the-spot claiming: the questions your front desk answers twenty times a day. You supply the detail, we make it easy to find.

A page for every clinical service

Eye examinations, children's eye tests, myopia management, Ortho-K, contact lens fitting, dry eye, OCT imaging, diabetic and glaucoma screening.

Your frame brands, presented properly

Patients search brands by name. A structured eyewear range gives them a reason to visit you rather than order online.

Practitioner profiles

Qualifications, AHPRA registration, therapeutic endorsement, special interests and languages spoken, all presented factually.

A search-ready structure

Clean heading hierarchy, page titles and descriptions written for each service, and a sitemap submitted at launch. The groundwork an SEO campaign needs, whether you run one now or later.

Optical eCommerce (quoted separately)

WooCommerce for frames and contact lenses, with prescription upload, saved reorder parameters and click-and-collect.

Fast, mobile-first build

Core Web Vitals in the green, readable type for older patients, and forms that work one-handed on a phone.

Training & handover

Your team learns to update hours, staff and promotions without calling us. You own the domain, hosting and content.

AHPRA compliance

Built with AHPRA advertising rules in mind

Optometrists are registered health practitioners. That makes your website regulated advertising under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law.

Section 133 and the National Boards' advertising guidelines apply to every page you publish, every social post and every Google Ads headline. This is where most web designers get practices into trouble, usually with the best of intentions.

The most common breach we see is a Google reviews widget bolted onto an optometry homepage. Reviews sitting on your Google Business Profile are one thing. Reproducing patient comments about clinical care inside your own website is a different matter, and the penalties are not trivial.

What we do differently on health practitioner sites

You write your own content, because nobody knows your practice better. What we do is read it before launch with these rules in mind, and tell you what we would change:

  • We do not install patient testimonial sliders or Google review widgets on health practitioner sites, and will say so if you ask for one
  • We flag unsubstantiated superlatives such as “best optometrist in Sydney”
  • We flag before-and-after imagery that could create unrealistic expectations
  • We flag any offer or discount published without its full terms and conditions
  • We flag qualifications or titles that may not match Board requirements
  • We suggest verifiable trust signals instead: years established, credentials, technology, professional memberships

You decide what to change. The final content is yours.

To be clear about the boundaries: we are a web design agency, not your legal advisor, and we do not certify your content as compliant. Under the National Law the responsibility for compliant advertising sits with the practice as the advertiser. What we do is build the site so it does not create obvious problems, and point out anything your principal optometrist should look at before launch.

Booking that connects to the system you already use

You should not have to change practice management software to get a decent website. We work with what you have.

Embedded booking

Where your provider supports it, the booking widget sits inside your own page so patients are never handed off mid-decision.

Tracked handoff

Where embedding is not possible, we track the click as a conversion so you can see which pages and keywords actually produce appointments.

Recall & reorder

Landing pages for two-year recall campaigns, plus contact lens reorder forms that route straight to your practice inbox.

Separate service

Local SEO for optical practices

Optometry is a walking-distance purchase, so local search matters more here than in most industries. SEO is a separate monthly service rather than part of the website build. Here is what it involves, so you can decide whether you need it.

Google Business Profile as the front door

For a bricks-and-mortar practice, the map pack usually outperforms the organic listing. We align your categories, services, attributes, hours and photos with your website content, and make sure your practice details match exactly everywhere they appear, including in your structured data.

Structured data that identifies you correctly

Optical practices sit awkwardly between retail and healthcare. We mark up the practice using the schema types that match what you actually do, so search engines and AI assistants describe your services, hours and practitioners accurately.

Suburb pages only where they are honest

We will not build you forty near-identical suburb pages. Google has discounted that pattern for years and it dilutes the pages that were working. Where you genuinely serve surrounding areas, we build a small number of substantial pages with real local detail: parking, transport, landmarks and referral relationships.

Content that answers real patient questions

How often children should have their eyes tested. What a bulk-billed eye test covers. Whether blue light lenses are worth it. Why an OCT scan is recommended. These bring in patients months before they are ready to book, and increasingly they are what AI assistants quote when someone asks about eye care.

Selling frames, lenses and contact lenses online

Independent practices are losing contact lens repeat business to overseas retailers. An online store keeps the aftercare, the recall relationship and the margin with you.

We build WooCommerce stores for optical retail: frame catalogues with brand filtering, prescription upload at checkout, contact lens reorder with saved parameters, subscription supply, click-and-collect and health fund receipting. Prescription verification is handled properly so you stay on the right side of your obligations.

Designer frames need a different treatment again. Brands like Masunaga, Lindberg and Tom Ford come with their own visual standards, and a catalogue that looks cheap costs you the sale before the price is even seen. We give each brand its own story page, and flag frames that can only be fitted in person so the online range supports the practice rather than competing with it.

SPEX. Optometrist

Clinical care and designer eyewear on one site

An independent boutique practice on Whitehorse Road in Balwyn, Melbourne. They needed one website to do two jobs that usually sit apart: turn local patients into eye test appointments, and present a designer frame collection at the standard those brands expect. They also serve a large Cantonese and Mandarin speaking community across Balwyn, Box Hill and Kew, so the site had to work for patients arriving via WeChat as well as Google.

  • Persistent Book Now action on every page, plus a separate entry point for children's eye tests
  • Fourteen clinical service pages: Ortho-K, myopia management, contact lens and RGP fitting, OCT, visual fields, diabetic and glaucoma screening, VicRoads assessments
  • Bulk billing, out-of-pocket fees and overseas student cover given their own place, where patients actually look
  • A 250-piece eyewear store: Masunaga, Lindberg, Tom Ford, Gucci, IC! Berlin, Projekt Produkt, Gigi Studios and Burberry, each with a brand page
  • Acuvue contact lenses filtered by daily, single vision and astigmatism, with accounts for repeat ordering
  • Suburb pages with genuine local detail rather than the same paragraph with the name swapped out
  • Credentials rather than testimonials, with no patient review widgets, in line with the rules for registered health practitioners

How it works

Five steps from first call to launch.

  1. Discovery call

Thirty minutes on your practice, your patients, your practice management system, and what your current site is or is not doing. We look at your local competitors before we speak.

  2. Fixed quote and sitemap

A written scope, a page-by-page sitemap and a fixed price. Nothing starts until you approve it.

  3. Content and design

We send you a content brief telling you exactly what to write for each page and what photos we need. While you work on that, we design the key templates. Practices that get their content back quickly launch quickly. This is almost always the step that decides the timeline.

  4. Build and integration

Full build, booking integration, structured data, speed optimisation and testing across devices.

  5. Launch and handover

We go live, submit your sitemap to Search Console, and train your team. Then we stay reachable, seven days a week, and we will tell you honestly whether SEO or Google Ads is worth adding, or whether the new site alone is enough for now.

Common questions

How much does an optometrist website cost in Australia?

Realweb builds optometry practice websites from $1,999 plus GST as a fixed price. That covers design, build, content and launch. Ongoing services are priced separately: SEO, Google Business Profile optimisation, Google Ads management, hosting and maintenance are all optional and quoted on their own. Optical eCommerce, multi-location practices and large frame catalogues are also quoted separately.

Can we display Google reviews on our optometry website?

Generally no, not where those reviews comment on clinical care. Section 133 of the National Law prohibits testimonials in advertising a regulated health service, and reproducing patient reviews inside your own website is treated as your advertising. Reviews sitting on your Google Business Profile are a separate matter. We build trust using factual signals instead. Your practice remains the responsible advertiser, so we recommend your principal optometrist reviews anything you are unsure about.

Can you integrate our existing booking system?

Usually yes, but it depends on your platform. Some booking providers embed in minutes; others need real development work or have no public integration at all. We look at what you run during the discovery call and quote the integration separately from the website build, so you know the cost before anything starts rather than after.

What do we need to provide?

Your written content and your photos. We send you a content brief that tells you exactly what to write for each page, what length, and which questions to answer, so you are not staring at a blank document. You know your practice and your patients better than any copywriter, and content written by the practice reads more honestly. If you would rather not write it, ask us about copywriting as an add-on.

How long does a new optometry website take?

Typically four to six weeks from approved quote to launch, and the deciding factor is almost always how quickly your content comes back to us. Practices that block out a couple of hours to work through the content brief launch on time. Practices that leave it sitting do not.

Do you work with practices outside Sydney?

Yes. We are based in St Leonards on Sydney's lower north shore and work with practices across Australia remotely, including our SPEX. Optometrist project in Melbourne. For Sydney practices we are happy to visit in person.

Can we sell frames and contact lenses online?

Yes. We build WooCommerce stores for optical retail, with prescription upload, contact lens reorder using saved parameters, subscription supply, click-and-collect and health fund receipting. Quoted separately from a standard practice website.

Who owns the website when it is finished?

You do. The domain, hosting account, WordPress installation and content are yours. No proprietary platform lock-in and no penalty for moving elsewhere later.
